These trowels serve as reminders of important moments in Zandvoort’s history. One such trowel was used during the construction of the school on Hogeweg in 1884. The other marks the laying of the cornerstone for the Haarlemsche Kinderhuis in 1901, designed by architect J. Drost. Such ceremonial objects symbolize confidence in the future and mark the beginning of a new building. They serve as tangible reminders of Zandvoort’s growth and development around the turn of the century. Read more here about the laying of the cornerstone at the public elementary school on Hogeweg. Belgian refugees [caption id="attachment_7442" align="alignnone" width="1267"] Commemorative Cassette for Belgian Refugees[/caption] A commemorative box was donated on behalf of the Belgian refugees who were housed in Zandvoort during World War I. It is a wooden box with brass fittings and a brass engraving depicting a kneeling woman and child before Lady Hollandia. The engraving bears the text: “Your suffering is my suffering.” On the end of the box, a small plaque is engraved with the words: “In memory of the World War 14–15–16.” The engraving was created by A.H. Billens.
</oembed>
