The Zeemanshofje was home to the cottages of poor fishing families. Sometimes the fishermen were lucky enough to have a bountiful catch, but generally they had to make do with a meager catch. After the Zandvoortselaan was opened in 1826, the road through the village was designed so that visitors could not see the poorer segment of the population. Hendrik Valkenburg (1826–1896) Hendrik Valkenburg was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and art teacher, known for his atmospheric depictions of farm life and fishermen. After studying in Deventer and Antwerp, he worked for many years as an art teacher before he was able to devote himself entirely to painting. His work is characterized by a realistic style, warm lighting, and a focus on daily life in the Dutch countryside. Today, his paintings and drawings are included in the collections of various Dutch museums and private collections.
</oembed>
