During his military service, he met photographer Henry de Louw, from whom he learned the craft. After settling in Zandvoort in 1874, he captured the village, the beach, and seaside life on film. He compiled this photo album for German vacationers staying at the Groot Badhuis. They could order prints as a memento of their stay. Thanks to Bakels, we now have a unique visual history of Zandvoort from around 1900. Poetry Album The verses written in a poetry album are touching. We have exhibited four poetry albums belonging to Alida Kemp (1904\u20131912), Corrie Hendrikse (1938\u20131943), Maria Johanna Kerkman (1906\u20131915), and Leentje Hollenberg (1890\u20131894)."}
