Zandvoort 200 years seaside resort
Zandvoorts Museum has several exhibitions and activities in store for 2026 for the anniversary year Zandvoort 200 years seaside resort. January 30 was the book presentation of the book’ En Zandvoort heilig strand is van mijn ‘togt het doel” by Koen Marijt. The book is the basis for the anniversary year Zandvoort 200 years seaside resort. The book impressively shows the history.
In 1304, Zandvoort is mentioned by name for the first time in historical documents. It is a village behind the dunes where a small community lives from fishing until the beginning of the nineteenth century. A difficult existence, especially if the fish catches are disappointing. In French times there is great poverty in the village. From 1826, a turnaround takes place due to the start of the construction of a bathhouse and, more importantly: a good road connection with Haarlem. Five notables from Amsterdam and Haarlem take the initiative to do so. After all, taking a sea bath will be good for the health of the population of Haarlem and, on the other hand, employment will be created in Zandvoort at the same time. This is the beginning of the coastal town as we know it today.
The book is exclusively available in the Museum Shop.
