Zandvoorts Museum presents two illustration exhibitions from May 30 to July 26, 2026: the cartoons of Zandvoort local Hans van Pelt and the illustrations of Henriët van Roosmalen.
Hans van Pelt: Cartoons with a sharp eye on society
Zandvoorts Museum presents a retrospective exhibition of cartoons by Hans van Pelt from May 30 to July 26, 2026. The cartoons are on display in the ZM-Passage. Hans van Pelt’s cartoons form a unique blend of humor, observation, and social engagement. In his work, mild irony and sharp criticism alternate. Using simple means—felt-tip pen, paper, and a keen eye—he manages to capture everyday situations that are both recognizable and confronting. Many of his drawings address social injustices. Animal and human suffering are subjects he feels strongly about. Through his cartoons, he aims to draw attention to these themes and encourage people to think about what is happening in the world. His work is not only critical but also human and accessible.
Hans van Pelt’s artistic career began promisingly with publications in well-known Dutch magazines such as Vrij Nederland and De Lach. These early publications gave him the opportunity to further develop his style and build an audience.
Today, Hans van Pelt regularly works on commission for weekly magazines and periodicals. In addition, he publishes weekly cartoons in the Zandvoortse Courant, where he depicts current events and everyday situations in his own characteristic way.
His work demonstrates that a single drawing can sometimes say more than a thousand words.
From May 30 to July 26, 2026, Zandvoorts Museum presents a special exhibition by illustrator Henriët van Roosmalen. In the Museum Café, visitors can admire the original drawings of Rein, the White Dune Rabbit, a cheerful and educational scavenger hunt through historic Zandvoort.
The exhibition introduces visitors to atmospheric illustrations of the old village. Iconic buildings come to life in the watercolors and pen drawings, such as the Town Hall, the Village Church, and vanished hotels on the Zandvoort boulevard. The exhibition is suitable for children, families, and lovers of illustration art and local history.
Scavenger Hunt
Rein, the White Dune Rabbit, takes children on an adventure through the center of Zandvoort. Rein accidentally jumps through a time hole and ends up in modern-day Zandvoort. His rabbit friends have disappeared, and together with the participants, he goes in search of clues in the village.
The scavenger hunt starts at the Zandvoorts Museum and combines heritage, stories, and education in a playful way. The booklet was developed for Festival Vloed and is available at the museum desk. You can also download fun coloring pages of Rein from the Zandvoorts Museum website.
About illustrator Henriët van Roosmalen
Henriët van Roosmalen is an illustrator, writer, and teacher. She is known for children’s books, educational projects, and the popular character Kees de Muis. Since 1999, she has worked as a professional illustrator for museums, heritage projects, and educational methods throughout the Netherlands. Her work has been awarded several times, including the international audience award of the Key Colours Illustrator’s Award.
