From December 11, 2026, through February 14, 2027, Annemarie Timmer ’s work will be on display in the ZM-Passage and the Museum Café at the Zandvoorts Museum. The exhibition brings together two important aspects of her artistic practice: painting and poetry. In addition to her paintings, her unique poems will also be on display and available to read. Image and language are inextricably linked in Timmer’s work.
Annemarie Timmer has been working as a visual artist since 1980. Her paintings stem from a lifelong interest in landscape, memory, perception, and imagination. A major source of inspiration is the landscape around the IJssel River. Timmer grew up with the river and refers to herself as an “IJssel child.”
The concept of wandering plays an important role in her work. For Timmer, wandering means not only roaming through a landscape, but also giving space to the painting process. She explores, searches, gets lost, and discovers new possibilities. This gives rise to paintings in which recognizable landscapes can merge into abstract forms and in which memory and reality seem to blend together.
The works invite you to look at them for a while. What at first appears to be a color, a shape, or a layer of paint can slowly evolve into a landscape, a memory, or a personal association.
In addition to her work as an artist, Timmer is active as an art historian and writer. Her approach to art and her interest in history, memory, and meaning are also reflected in her poetry. In 2026, her first poetry collection, *Hoor de Roerfluit en de Nachthoorn*, was published. That same year, the collection was nominated for the Eijlders Poetry Encouragement Prize, an important incentive for emerging poets. The nomination underscores Timmer’s remarkable development as a poet.
The exhibition at the Zandvoorts Museum brings together paintings and poems. They should not be viewed so much as two separate art forms, but rather as different ways of seeing, remembering, and representing.
Just as a painting speaks through color, form, and paint, a poem uses words, rhythm, and sound. Together, they create a multi-layered experience in which visitors are invited not only to look and read, but also to draw their own conclusions.
