Bomschuit

For centuries, the bomschuit was Zandvoort’s quintessential fishing boat. Thanks to its flat bottom and lack of a keel, the boat could easily navigate the surf and be pulled directly onto the beach. With the help of horses, the boats were moved to a safe spot above the high-tide line during the winter. The Zandvoort bomschuiten were relatively small; fishermen usually did not stay at sea for more than a week. Generations of Zandvoort residents earned their living with these distinctive boats. In 1929, the last bomschuit was taken out of service. This model illustrates just how important fishing has been to the village.
