Photographer Anthonie Bakels (1852–1939) was the village photographer of Zandvoort from the second half of the 19th century. His photographs are an invaluable visual source of daily life, association life and the changing streetscape of Zandvoort between approximately 1872 and well beyond. Bakels, but also his son and grandchildren, not only captured tourism and the coastline, but also local events: parades, sports competitions, school photos, fanfares, theater performances and village portraits. His work is  both documentary and aesthetically valuable– sharp, carefully framed and with an eye for atmosphere and detail. The Zandvoort Museum manages a large collection a large collection of his original photographs, negatives and glass plates.
