Bakels Collection

Photographer Anthonie Bakels (1852–1939) was the pre-eminent village photographer of Zandvoort from the second half of the 19th century. His photographs constitute an invaluable visual source regarding daily life, community organizations, and the evolving streetscape of Zandvoort between approximately 1872 and well beyond.

Bakels Collection

Bakels, as well as his son and grandchildren, captured not only tourism and the coastline but also local events: parades, sporting competitions, school photos, brass bands, theatrical performances, and village portraits. His work is both documentarily and aesthetically valuable—sharp, carefully framed, and with an eye for atmosphere and detail. The Zandvoorts Museum manages an extensive collection of his original photographs, negatives, and glass plates.
