Kees Verkade

In all its simplicity, this bronze statuette by Kees Verkade captures the power of human expression. The figure is a study for the Resistance Monument. A standing, naked male figure holds his right arm bent before his chest as a sign of resistance. His left arm is held straight by his side. Verkade is renowned for his ability to capture movement and emotion in bronze. This work also showcases his signature style: a quiet pose that simultaneously radiates strength and vulnerability.

Resistance Monument study

The statuette in the spotlight is a study for the resistance monument located on Verzetsplein in Zandvoort. Kees Verkade created the sculpture in 2002, commissioned by the Municipality of Zandvoort. The monument was unveiled on October 17, 2002, by Mr. Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, the ‘Soldier of Orange’. The memorial refers to all acts of resistance, in the past, the present, and the future.
